How to install a new window some tips from My Window Man.
Installing a new window can be a complex process, but here is a general guide to help you get started:
Materials and tools needed:
New window
Measuring tape
Hammer
Pry bar
Level
Drill
Screws
Caulking gun
Silicone caulk
Flashing Tape
Steps:
1. Measure the existing window opening to determine the size of the new window needed.
2. Remove the old window by carefully prying off the window trim and using a hammer and pry bar to loosen the frame. Remove any nails or screws that are holding the frame in place.
3. Once the old window
is removed, clean the opening thoroughly and make sure it is free of debris.
4. Apply flashing tape along the bottom of the frame folding down covering 2-3” depending on the type and size of trim.
5. Install the new window frame by placing it into the opening and ensuring that it is level. Use shims to adjust the frame as needed.
6. Once the frame is level and secure, screw it into place using screws that are long enough to penetrate the framing around the opening. Oftentimes galvanized roofing nails are used if the window has fins.
7. Apply a bead of silicone caulk around the outside of the frame to create a watertight seal.
8. Install the sashes and any other hardware that came with the new window.
9. For windows with fins, additional strips of flashing tape should be applied to seal the gap between the window and siding. These will get covered by the trim so don't cut them too wide.
10. Apply additional caulk around the inside of the window frame to create an airtight seal.
11. Install the window trim around the outside of the frame to finish the installation.
12. Test the window to make sure it opens and closes smoothly and that it is properly sealed.
